Go Pro Test Report

GoPro HD Hero 960
Chantelle Spence

Goal

The goal is to have proper camera placement, avoid lens fogging, and determine what modes to use when recording video of flight.

Description

The GoPro camera will be placed horizontally downward. This direction will allow us to see a view of the ground and provide us with a view of the horizontal curvature of the earth.  We will position the camera at a 5 degree angle downward.
To prevent the lens on the camera from getting foggy we will apply Rain-X to the housing.  This allows water to bead and roll off of the camera.
Camera battery lasted about 3 hours when we tested it in class; it may be slightly less in colder temperatures.  The battery BacPac could be used to double the battery life.  The 32GB SD card we will be using will store 5 hours 26 minutes with 960p. Charge time takes 2 hours with a computer USB port.  The field of view for the GoPro is 170 degrees in both the 960p and 720p setting.

Results

For our main camera, it will be placed looking horizontally downward.  The video will be recorded in 960p to allow for greater resolution compared to 720p.

Recommended Actions

To allow for longer video, we should consider using a BacPac to double battery life.  If a secondary GoPro is used, it would be placed upward facing the balloon.  This placement will allow us to view the balloon if it pops.
